Filippo Giorgi è esperto internazionale di modellistica climatica, cambiamenti climatici, interazioni fra clima e biosfera ed interazioni fra clima e qualità dell’aria. Dopo una laurea in fisica all’Universita’ degli Studi dell’Aquila e un dottorato di ricerca in scienze dell’atmosfera al Georgia Institute of Technology, negli Stati Uniti, ha lavorato per dodici anni al National Center for Atmosferic Research di Boulder, in Colorado. In seguito ha integrato l’ICTP, dove è stato responsabile della Sezione di Fisica della Terra. Nel 2024 è diventato ricercatore emerito. Ha contribuito alla stesura dei rapporti sui cambiamenti climatici redatti dal Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) fin dagli anni novanta. Dal 2002 al 2008 è stato vice-direttore del Gruppo di Lavoro I dell’IPCC che, nel 2007, ha vinto il premio Nobel per la pace. Fra i suoi riconoscimenti, annovera la medaglia Alexander von Humboldt della European Geosciences Union.

Filippo Giorgi is an international expert in climate modelling, climate change and impacts, biosphere-atmosphere interactions and chemistry-climate interactions.
He obtained a PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology, in the United States, and worked for twelve years at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, before moving to ICTP, in the Earth System Physics section. He became Emeritus scientist at ICTP in 2024. Giorgi contributed to the first 5 reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). From 2002 to 2008 he was one of the vice chairs of Working Group I of the IPCC, which won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Among his awards is the 2018 Alexander von Humboldt medal of the European Geosciences Union.
