Abstract
Sitting at the laboratory bench means taking on the enormous challenge of contributing daily to the advancement of science for those outside who are waiting for answers, treatments, and hope. For more than thirty years, together with colleagues at our laboratory at the University of Milan, I have dedicated my life to researching Huntington's chorea, a neurodegenerative disease that, beyond causing pain and suffering, often leads to shame, isolation, and discrimination. As often happens in science, our studies have intersected with those of other researchers and laboratories in Europe and around the world, creating connections and collaborations that allow us to expand our knowledge and expertise every day. However, while we race towards the goal of understanding and treating the disease, there is much more we can do to support patients and their families in a tangible way. We can involve them, explain the nature of our research, share our discoveries, and listen to their fears. Beyond the laboratory, every day, we weave networks of communication, sharing, and trust, both within the scientific community and with society at large.
