Andrés Muro

group leader Mouse Molecular Genetics Laboratory ICGEB

Having obtained a PhD in Biology in 1992 from the School of Sciences, University of Buenos Aires, between 1992-2004 Dr. Muro proceeded to be a Postdoc and then Staff Scientist in the Molecular Pathology laboratory of the ICGEB, Trieste. Since 2005, Dr. Muro has been Group Leader of the Mouse Molecular Genetics Laboratory at ICGEB. The main focus of his research is understanding gene functions, their relation to diseases, and the development of efficient therapeutic approaches, with special emphasis in metabolic liver diseases, such as neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and the Crigler-Najjar syndrome type I. He is interested in understanding the mechanisms of bilirubin neurotoxicity, in order to develop pharmacological and gene therapy approaches aimed at avoiding severe and permanent brain damage and lethality. Together with his team, he participates in international research and clinical networks that aim to transfer the developed gene therapy approaches to the clinic.
